Plant Profiles: Hellebores

One of the most common varieties, Helleborus orientalis, also known as the Lenten Rose, is among the earliest winter bloomers and has multiple color options.

Hellebores grow in zones 4-9 and are treated as perennials in the high country. Hellebores grow 1-1.5 ft. tall in full to part shade. They are known for their semi-evergreen leaves and being deer resistant. Remove dead leaves for an early spring clean up to make room for new growth.

Hellebore blooms also make beautiful cut flowers! Be sure to cut the flowers when they are past bloom because cutting buds before they open will make them wilt. These are great flowers for container gardening as well as landscape.

Shop Hellebores and other perennials at the Mustard Seed Market while supplies last!

The Mustard Seed Market is located at 5589 US HWY 321-S in Blowing Rock, NC.
